Janez Drnovsek, ex-Slovenian president who helped lead country to independence, dies

Slovenia--Former President Janez Drnovsek, who helped lead Slovenia to independence from Yugoslavia and later enthralled many of his countrymen by adopting a New Age lifestyle, died Saturday, his office said. He was 57.
Mild-mannered but resolute, Drnovsek became a political icon in part for working to keep violence at a minimum when Slovenia gained independence in 1991. He later led the country to European Union and NATO membership.
In recent years, as he battled cancer, he made a radical transformation to a holistic lifestyle and wrote several New Age-influenced books........

Meat Means Misery for the World's Hungry

It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of edible animal flesh
There is more than enough food in the world to feed the entire human population. So why are more than 840 million people still going hungry?

What is the Vegetarian Beef About World Hunger?

20 million people die annually due to hunger and its effects. Although this is a result of many complex interrelated geographic, social and economic factors, the remedy to this tragedy is ideally quite simple. An even slightly more equitable distribution of food resources (which could be fueled by a larger agrarian output) would alleviate much human suffering.

Save the planet – change your diet

According to UN’s report, the meat industry is the main producer of greenhouse gas emissions: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ammoniac. Besides, the FAO ensures that ranching is “the major driver of deforestation worldwide” and overgrazing is turning a fifth of all pastures and ranges into desert. Pesticides, antibiotics and hormones used to treat cattle get into drinking water and endanger human health.

Cloned or conventional, meat is unsafe

The Food and Drug Administration recently declared that meat and milk from cloned cows, pigs and goats and their offspring are "as safe to eat as food from conventionally bred animals." That's like saying that brand A cigarettes are as safe to smoke as brand B. The question isn't whether meat and milk from cloned animals pose additional health risks - it's why would anyone want to consume meat and milk at all?

Vegetarianism: Supported in the Bible

The Bible has many quotations against meat-eating as can be seen from the following: "But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat. And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will I require it." (Genesis 9.4-5)
