Jashu
ShahThe Vegetarian Society (Reverence for Life) in Mumbai has informed us that Jashu Shah died on 9 May 2008. This is unexpected and very sad news: we have lost a great campaigner for vegetarianism not just in India and Asia but throughout the whole world.

Jashubhai attended his first IVU congress in India in 1957 andgradually became more involved, eventually becoming a member of theInternational Council in 1982. He was Regional Secretary for 20 yearsfrom 1986, finally retiring during the IVU Congress that he organised in Goa in 2006. He was the first president of the Asian Vegetarian Union from 1999 until his retirement in 2007, as well as being Secretary of the Vegetarian Society (Reverence for Life) in Mumbai for many years.

It was always a pleasure meeting Jashubhai at IVU and EVU congresses, and he became a close personal friend. He was planning to come to Dresden for the Centenary World Congress and we were all looking forward very much to seeing him again. Now he has gone forever, and it is almost impossible to imagine an IVU congress without him.We shall miss him very much both in Dresden and beyond.

We have lost a very good friend whom we shall always remember with gratitude and respect. We send our condolences above all to his family and also to The Vegetarian Society in Mumbai.
